In
1995, Joseph Phelps Vineyards purchased acreage off Wild Horse Road near King
City in Monterey County, and budded 15 acres to Syrah. A year later an adjacent
parcel was purchased and additional Syrah planted. These grapes were mainly
used in the Le Mistral blend, but in 1999 the yield – and quality – were such
that for the first time we set aside a small amount and bottled it under the
Monterey appellation. We think this is one of the most exciting Syrahs we’ve
ever produced. With aromas of red cherry, dried tea leaves and smoky meat,
it exudes a distinct Rhone-like style. The wine also displays a rich dark
purple color and supple tannins, and is especially delicious when served with
roasted meats and vegetables. |
