Grapes
were harvested from September 29, - October 7, 1995 at an average 23.4 degrees
Brix, fermented in stainless steel, then aged 18 months in 60-gallon French
and American oak barrels before being blended and bottled in July, 1997. |
Over
time, we have shifted our Syrah plantings from the warmer location of the
home ranch to the more temperate regions of Yountville, Carneros and Monterey
County. Grapes grown in these cooler areas enjoy a longer hang time yet do
not become overripe, and wines made from them tend to be less tannic and astringent.
The 1995 vintage produced Syrah grapes of exceptional flavor concentration
and balance, and the wine is just beginning to reveal itself with aromas of
red fruits, dried flowers, a subtle mocha component and hints of oak. Framed
with ripe tannins, the youthful flavors and persistent finish indicate a long
life ahead. We recommend serving the 1995 Syrah with grilled meats, stews
or hearty chicken dishes. |
