WHAT
IS VIOGNIER?
Viognier
is the celebrated white grape of Condrieu, a small appellation
in the Northern Rhône Valley of France whose terraced
hillsides date back to the Roman occupation. The origin of the
grape is disputed, although it is generally believed to have
come from Dalmatia (now Yugoslavia), around the third century.
Production of Viognier is extremely limited in Condrieu, and
the wine is prized for its exotic wildflower bouquet and delicate
fruit flavors. In the 17th century, Pascal, noted French scientist
and philosopher, wrote:
"Ah, the white wine of Condrieu! Cool, supple on
the tongue, it will surprise you with its indefinable taste,
almost reminiscent of apple . . . When you've finished drinking,
you'll discover that a little miracle has occurred - the sun,
which generously bathes the vineyards, is now within you!"
