Twelfth Annual Insignia Weekend — May 14, 15 and 16, 2010
Club members will enjoy live music, tasty hors d'oeuvres and fabulous wines including barrel samples, library wines and current releases.  This event will officially launch the 2008 Insignia futures program.  Due to space restrictions at the winery, reservations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis.  Once the event is full, no more reservations will be accepted.  As always, this exclusive event is for our valued Phelps Preferred members only.

Insignia Futures
Phelps Preferred members have the opportunity to pre-order the Insignia, our flagship wine, each year at a discount which is greater than the normal 20% club discount. This allows club members to secure orders of Insignia one year before it is released to the public.

Although the Insignia is not included in the automatic quarterly shipments for the 'Original' club, all Phelps Preferred members receive exclusive futures offers and pre-sale programs for the Insignia.

The Wines
CORE VARIETALS. We try to present a core wine in each shipment, which would include Cabernet Sauvignon or Sauvignon Blanc.

RHÔNE-STYLE VARIETALS. In addition to the core wines, Joseph Phelps produces a series of Rhône-style wines that may include one or more of the following: Viognier, a delicate white varietal with wildflower aromas and tropical fruit flavors; and Syrah, a rich, spicy red wine which Phelps has produced since 1974.

INSIGNIA. Because of its limited production and consistently high ratings, Insignia is probably the most sought-after wine produced by Joseph Phelps Vineyards each year. We make it available to Phelps Preferred members through exclusive futures and pre-sale offers. Considered our "flagship" wine, Insignia is fashioned after the great reds of Bordeaux and represents the highest expression of winemaking available to us in a given vintage.

LIMITED PRODUCTION. We also make available to Phelps Preferred members limited-production wines.  These include the Backus Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from our estate-owned vineyard south of the Oakville Cross Road along the Silverado Trail and a number of wines produced for Phelps Preferred and our retail sales department: Viognier, Syrah, Eisrébe, and Merlot.  Some of these wines may be too limited to include in the automatic quarterly shipments, but we make them available to members through our seasonal newsletter “Spring Valley Times”, special mailings and e-mail notifications.

Phelps Preferred Shipping Policy
RECIPROCAL & NON-RECIPROCAL STATES. The winery is faced with a number of shipping dilemmas revolving around the current reciprocal laws in each state. Currently, we have reciprocal agreements with many states, wherein we can ship wine directly from the winery to our Phelps Preferred members in those states. Unfortunately, it is illegal for us to ship wine to customers in the remaining "non-reciprocal" states.

To determine the reciprocal status of your state, please feel free to call the winery and inquire with the retail staff or Duane Harris (800-707-5789).

The Origins of Phelps Preferred
In the early 1990's, the hospitality staff at Joseph Phelps Vineyards established the Insignia Club, a program designed to alert our supporters of the availability of particularly limited wines. At the time, the retail room was located in a small utility closet, converted to accommodate retail sales. The hospitality staff was all of three full-time employees. The Insignia Club was a recipe box containing approximately 50 names and phone numbers, including a handwritten sales history for each customer. When certain wines became available for purchase, we would phone each of our Insignia Club members, offering the wines at a discount.

Today, Joseph Phelps Vineyards offers a beautifully renovated guest center and private tasting room and a large and knowledgeable staff. In June of 1995 we established Phelps Preferred, a consumer club designed to ship limited wines to our customers around the country. In just a few years, what started out as the 50-member Insignia club has become our much admired Phelps Preferred Private Consumer Club and it is growing every day. In place of the recipe box is a state-of-the art computer system and database.
